THEFT OF BENZINE.
“This s a particularly unfortunate case,” said Mr Keith Kirkcaldie, when Crank Lawton was arraigned before the Wellington Supreme Court, 'yesterday, for theft of benzine, (he property of his employers, Levin and Co. Counsel went on to say that Lawton had borne an unblemished reputation for 25 years, during which lime be. had been in the employ of the Foxton Harbour Board as harbourmaster, and Levin and Co. He had a wife and seven children to support.
Caplaiu Edward John Harvey and Mr William Edwin Fuller,, manager of the shipping department of Levin and Co., gave evidence as to tho previous good character of the. prisoner, but His Honour, while admitting that if it were not for the circumstance that the offence was prevalent and . one which must be put down, could nut agree that it was one for probation. He said that Lawton knew the offence was a serious one against the community, ;{nd yet into it with his eyes open; therefore, be could not expect to go scot free. He, would be sentenced to ■ six months’ imprisonment with bafd labour.
