THE GAS WORKS.

MANAGER'S REPORT. The Oas Works Manager’s repori as follows was read and adopted at Monday night’s meeting of tho Borough Council. —The amount of gas manufactured in September was 573,200 feet, an increase of 40,000 feet over the corresponding period of last year. I changed six meters on die lirst of the month and since reading my meters this month have found the saving in gas to he 4000 feet for lighting, representing £2 0s 10d nett, and 3800 feet for cooking representing £1 10s 5d nett. I found only live meters not registering this month, f cleared two services of water and sand. The stoker was off sick for a week so had Mr McNight to help in the slokehouse. During the month 1 overhauled the small holder and was surprised to liud it in such a bad stale; some of the plates were leaking and it would he useless to go, on painting it. A number of new plates need lo he put in and this should he done at once. I would recommend that the two new retorts at the works he installed and that a connection he pul in the main at works. This will conned the new holder np lo supply the town while the small one is being repaired. We have enough coal in the yard to last alum! three weeks and I ask that the street lights bo kept off until belter supplies are available. The Mayor said that at the last meeting of the Council the matter of extensions lo the mains was referred to the Gas Works Committee lo bring down a repori, but unfortunately they had no! yet been able lo meet for this purpose, hut would, have the report ready for the next meeting. They would also go into the question of repairs to the holder referred to in the manager’s report.

The secretary of the Eoxton Racing Club applied to have tho gas connected with the Club’s cottage in Whyte Street. —The Alayor said that it had been decided hy tho Council that for any new connections the consumer, would lie called iqiou Id pay for I he cost of tin* pipes right from the main. This had beer.' done in connection with the installation at the school and (lie secretary of the Racing Club had informed him that the Club was prepared to do this. —It was decided that the gas be installed provided that the Club pay. all costs of pipes and installation.
