The Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1920. THE FISHHING INDUSTRY.
THE Chamber of Commerce has endeavoured to arouse interest in the local fishing industry. The meeting convened yesterday, however, was only attended by one fisherman, who staled that fishermen were conversant wilh (he CovernmenPs scheme to assist the fishing industry. As one speaker pointed (.nt (here was an abundance of fish along the coa-l. In order, however, to deal wilh the industry on a large scale the services of a trawler woidd tie necessary. This would require a capital sum of anything from ,0000 to £501)0. If a company were formed there is not the slightest doubt but. that it would be a very payable proposition, as the demand for lisli is greater than the supply. At present the local fishermen, except on rare occasions, restrict their operations to the river. What we suggest is that (he ('handier invite Mr Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, to visit Poxlon and meet all interested. He knows the business from A (o Z. It can then be ascertained what linancial support would be forthcoming to place the industry on a sound basis.
