THE PRICE OF BUTTER.
CONCLUSION OB EVIDENCE. Wellington, Sept. 2!). The butter prices enquiry continued throughout the afternoon and early evening, when the hearing of evidence Mas concluded. During the afternoon A. W. Rage, master grocer, Auckland, was given permission to make an explanation on behalf of ihe retail grocers of the Dominion. Witness staled that Mr Bennett, of Wellington, was speaking merely on his own behalf when he made the assertion that unless he got 12-1 per cent, pro lit he would prefer to see butter taken out of Ihe hands of the grocers altogether. The. majority of the grocers were desirous of retaining the retail distribution of Imlter at all costs. Questioned by members of the committee, witness said lie was of opinion that the suggested reduction in the price to Ihe poorer classes by means of ration tickets would lead to endless eonlusion on the score of discrimination. A witness from Eketahnna said there were hundreds of settlers just hanging on waiting for heller prices. The committee will report in due course.
