CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The monthly meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held last night, the president. (Mr J. M. Ran-) presiding. A letter was read from the Minister for Railways, through Mr E. Newman, M.P., advising that the early morning train from Foxion on -Mondays was to be altered to leave .Foxton at 7.50 a.m., and also Unit the Sale Saturday night train from Palmerston North would be tuned to leave Palmerston North at the same hour as on other nights. It wa.s decided to write to Mr E. Newman, thanking him for (he attention lie had given to this and other matters brought tinder his notice by the Chamber. The President mentioned that arrangements were being made to run a. motor service twice daily between T’oxton and Alartou to connect with the Main Trunk and other trains. — It was decided to give the proposal all the support possible. The question of the provision of a garbage cart for the borough, which had been before the Chamber at previous meetings, was again, dismissed, members expressing the opinion that in the interests of the health of the community something of the kind was absolutely essential. The Chamber had asked (he Borough Council to provide a garbage curt, but the proposal bad been turned down by that body.—Members present were of opinion that the matter should not be allowed to drop, and it was decided that a deputation consisting of Messrs Barr, Petrie, and Smith wait on the Council at its next meeting, with the request that this mutter be recon-

sidered. A letter was read from the secretary of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, advising that the annual meeting would he held in Wellington in November, and that all

remits for consideration at that meeting must reach Wellington by October 251 h.—lt was decided that, a remit from the Chamber, urging the construction of (he Levin-Mar-lon railway he pla<-ed on the order paper, and that the question ol other remits to be submitted he lei I in the hands of Messrs Perronn, Chrystall, Barr, Hornhlow and Smith to draft and forward on.

The question of the extension of (ho hours of (he local telephone exchange was brought up, the Chairman suggesting that an el tort should he made to have the exchange open for an hour or two on Sundays. it was pointed out that only a few more subscribers were required to entitle those connected to a continuous service. There were a number waiting to be connected up, but this work was held up owing to a shortage of material. It was suggested thiil steps be obtained to induce more farmers in the district In take advantage of the parly line system of telephone connection, particularly the farmers in the Marotiri and Mnutoa districts. — The Chairman was authorised to approach the postmaster and ascertain if it was possible to gei a Sunday service, and also to obtain all in forma lion in reference to parly lines, with a view to inducing Ihe farmers in the district to be connected up. Some little lime ago the Chamber wrote to the Department of Industries ami Commerce, asking for details of the Government's propo-ais for assisting the Fishing industry, and those details were received at last night's meeting. It was decided to convene a meeting of local fishermen and all Interested in the industry, to he held on Friday ol next week, when the Government regulations for the encouragement of the industry will he fully explained. The Chamber will be represented at the meeting by the following: —Messrs Fefreau, Harr, Christie, John Boss and Smith.
