The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER, 23, 1920. THE BOROUGH BAND.
MUSICAL matters seem to stir up discord rather than harmony in this little community. The piano incident was responsible for much bad feeling, recrimination and notoriety, now wo have a deadlock between the Borough Band and Council, which we hope will not run to the same absurd length iis the other affair. From what we can gather, it appears that baud instruments were procured some years ago by means of a public effort, and to ensure their safe custody the Borough Council was appointed trustees. Tin* Council, in order to encourage the Band, granted them a yearly subsidy, and provided a practice room. Things wont on smoothly until, I la; Council laid down certain conditions as to public performances, in order to justify the expenditure of public funds. The Band objected to the Council's conditions, which culminated in a deadlock. The Band have possession of (he instninionts, and claim to be a live body. The Council has invited certain band oflicials (o meet certain of its members in conference, and endeavour to come to some mutual understanding. We hope Ibis invitation will be accepted by the .Band, and with mutual confidence restored, to endeavour, with public assistance, to make the Band worthy of the town, and to encourage those who are willing to give I heir time to such a worthy and deserving institution.
