SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The ordinary meeting of the local State School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Claris (secretary), -W. Petrie, P. Robinson, A. Stevenson, duo. Ross, M. Perrean, a.nd the head teacher, Mr Furrio. An apology Tor absence was received Prom Mr G. Coley. The Chairman reported that the work of putting down the lawn and effecting other improvements, left to a sub-committee, had been supervised by Mr Coley. The work had been carried out according to the plans submitted, and approved by the Committee, but there was still a fair amount yet to be done. It was decided to erect a rustic fence dividing the front lawn from the playground, and to level the girls’ idaygronnd and turf the bank along the cutting made for pathway at the south entrance. Owing to the absence of the Board's architect, no estimate of cost of front gale had yet been received. It was reported that the gas had been laid on to the school, and it was decided to write the Board, requesting that the work of installing the gas [mints lie expedited. It was resolved to mill for lenders for erection of bicycle shelters, lenders to be left in the hands of Messrs Petrie, Stevenson and Robinson, with power to act, and that the head teacher supply details re speciticalions and location. Correspomtence was read and received from the Board re restricting holidays to those specified by regulation. The Chairman stated that the Committee had not exceeded the granting of school holidays, and were anxious that full time and punctuality should be at all times observed. The action of Mr Robinson in employing labour for top-dressing the tennis court was endorsed. The head teacher reported that the annual visit of inspectors was made by Messrs Crawford, Adams, and Milne, on 31s| August and September Ist, The report is not yet to hand: Miss Blackie, physical inspector and instructor, visited the school on August. lihh and 20th. In response to a request for assistance to the Willard Home, it was decided to circularise parents, asking for a Hat rale of sixpenny subscriptions, and to organise small entertainments in the class rooms. Application had been made to the Trustees of the Wanganui Museum for duplicate exhibits for the school museum. For the

second year in succession the school had won the Pirani Shield against all teams in the Manawalu district in the seven-aside Rugby scion! tournament. Two local xdohirs had been selected in the .Manawalu school representative team, viz., Westwood and K. Hobinson. Now that the water and drainage loan proposals had been carried it was suggested that an endeavour la* made lit secure the section at the rear of the old cemetery for swimming baths. .Mr Perreau had generous I v given the school the use of sufficient ground to lay out twenty garden [dots HH't. by 10ft.

The Chairman was authori-ed to communicate with the owner ol section at I lie rear of the old cemetery and endeavour to have the seclion transferred to the Department. A statement of requirements tor refurnishing was agreed to. Mr Perreau was accorded a vote of thanks for I lie use of ground for vegetable plots. .Messrs Hobinson and Boss were appointed visitors for the month. Accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting rose.
