LOCAL RAILWAY TIME-TABLE
EARLY MONDAY MORNING AND LATE SATURDAY NIGHT TRAINS TO BE ABANDONED. The local Chamber of Commerce !ms been in communication Avith the Raihvay authorities and Member for the district during the past lavo years in reference to an .alteration in (he raihvay time-table affecting the discontinuance of the early Monday morning train to, find late_ Saturday night train from, Palmerston. find requesting that the time-table on these occasions be tin.* same as on other days of the Avcek. Il Av;is pointed out that there avc.s no. justification for the early Monday morning train and bite Saturday night train, Avhich caused considerable inconvenience to the local public, and a serious loss to those engaged in the dairying industry. Mr NeAvman Avas asked to havesome finality reached in this matter. and the folloAving letter from the Minister of Raihva.vs to Mr Ncaviiiiiii indicates that (he request of the Chamber is to be granted. The change avi 11 be greatly appreciated by the public, and the Chamber should lose no time in continuing the Minister’s decision. The following letter, in reply, has been received by Mr E(lav;ird NwW man, M.P., from the Hon. \V, Massey, Minister for Raihvays, in reference to the subject: "I shall be glad to knoAv the vieAv taken by your Chamber Avith reference to the matter,” concludes Mr NeAvman: “With reference to your representations in support of the Eoxton Chamber of Commerce regarding the local raihvay time-lal.de, I have the honour to inform you that there is a good deal of local conllicling interest concerning the evening train from Palmerston North to Eoxton on Saturdays, and the early morning train Eoxton to Palmerston North on Mondays, investigation into the local claims, Avhich has taken some lime, slioavs that the Eoxton people Av.am one thing, the Palmerston North people Avail! another, Avhile the people at Rangiotu ask for something different from either. It is impossible to obtain unanimity. It is noAv proposed to drop the early running of the morning train on Mondays, for Avhich there is little justification, and Avhich causes inconvenience to consignors of milk. This train Avill IcaA’e as on other
mornings, at 7.50 a.m. The seaside traffic, which (he Palmerston North people consider the early running would encourage, has so Tar not materialised. It is intended also to lime the Saturday evening train Palmerston North to Pox ton as on ether nielli s. The Fox ton people desire this, and (hey are entitled to lirst consideration.”
