IjTom Town Clerk, Nelson City Council, asking the Council's support in urging on the Minister of Education the necessity of the Government undertaking the whole of the expense of education, and thus exempt local bodies from providing funds for technical education. —Received.
From the military authorities, offering gunpowder for sale. —Received.
From Orona County Council, tusking the Council to appoint delegates to attend the Hydro-Electric Conference to be held at Feilding on Sept ember 10. —Decided that the Councillors allend the conference.
From Horowhenua County t'oimcii, asking that this Council bo represented at a conference of local bodies to he held at Levin on September 25th, for the purpose of discussing the development of the Manga hao hydro-electric scheme. —The Chairman and Crs. Barber and Hunt to attend. GENERAL. In reference to the recent loans secured by the Connell for work within the county, a lengthy discussion took place regarding the purchase by the Council of a quantity of roading machinery. It was finally resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the Engineer. 1 On the motion of Cr. Barber, seconded by Cr. Penny, it was decided to make application to the State Advances Office for a loan of £1,290 for the purpose of const meting the Motniti Road. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT The chief items of traffic for the month ol August, 1920, were: Minerals 135 tons, merchandise 1 DBA Inns, timber 18.000 ft., crushed metal f.KiO yards. Fares amounted to £4 (is lid. The accounts show a debit of £135 4s 11, hut included in expenditure is £99 13s 4d for new rail fastenings. During the month I rouble was experienced with one of the “M” waggons, and (he Department slopped all the “M” waggons from miming on the Government line. The wheels have since been inspected by the Railway Department Examiner, and Nos. 3 and 5 have been condemned as unlit to run on I lie Government line. Some ol the wheels require new lyres, and others require (nming up. The lire box of loeoaiolive ‘‘Manawatu Inis been giving trouble, and requires to he examined by an expert. The following repairs require to he done to the *‘G” engine: Axle boxes relining and lilling to lake up end play in horn plates; trailing spring on left side requires re-setting or renewing; spring compensating levers require reaming mil and new plates titled. 1 would suggest that this work be (loin 1 at once while the crusher is not working. ENGINEER’S REPORT.
Awahou Riding.—l have been approached by ratepayers with reference to improving Russell Street. At present this is used by llaxmillers carting libre to and from their paddocks,- and the road being of light sandy formation, is cut into deep ruts and water channels, and under the present slate of the road it is unsafe for light Irallic. With reference to metalling Spring's Road, it will be advisable to have this road surveyed and the road properly defined before metalling is proceeded with. TRAMWAY REPORT. We are now removing damaged rails, near Penny’s Siding, and relaying a few ehains of now 401 b. rails, which we hope to have completed in a few days. The Rongotea Co.-Op-erative Society wish to obtain permission to erect a bulk store at Oroua Downs siding, under similar conditions to that granted by the Council for the store at Rongotea siding. While dealing with .this question it will be advisable to have a. survey made of the Tram Reserve, as it will be necessary to make more (nicking accommodation at this, siding. STONE CRT'S HER. Owing to the main cam shaft of the (-rnslier giving way, .1 have closed down the work for the time being, as the cost of repairing and replacing new parts is too great an expense. I would suggest that the Council should decide 1 to purchase a new -lone crusher to-day, and that Ihe Council decide where the stone crusher should he erected. In conjunction with Cr. Boyce, we made an inspection of the proposed new site for the stone crushing plant. 1 ■propose creeling the hoppers on No. 1 terrace, about 12 feet above water level on the hank of' the Kaiigilikei .River, at the end of the old bridge road. Rim a tramline from the present old site along the edge of the cliff'down to the proposed new hopper on a grade of Ito 00. lire stone crusher will be erected on No. 2 terrace, 20 feet above the tram line under the hopper. As the total height of the hopper will be approximately 25 feet, it will be necessary to erect elevators with the stone crusher to deliver the crushed metal into the hopper. I propose to build the superstructure of re-inforeed concrete and bins of heart of rimu, with a capacity of 100 cubic yards. About 0,000 feet of timber is'required to build the hopper, and this .should be ordered immediately.
