* When a fanner has his land valued by the Government it is nor much good his protesting. He has to pay up and look pleasant. The hoot, hoAvever, appears to be on the oilier foot when a demand is made upon Die Government. The following grave communication wvas received by the Rangilikei County Council on Thursday from the District Engineer:— “1 have reccived-an account from you for 8s lid, special rates on railway property at Marlon for year ending Alareh 31st, 1921. The previous account was 8s Bd. I notice that the rate in (he £ for special rates on Station Street has increased from one-seventh of a penny to three-twentieths of a penny. The Department is only liable for rates on special loans raised prior-to the property being purchased, and the rate should remain the same. Will you kindly advise lioav the increase is arrived at f” .When the letter Avas received Cr. F. R. If. Brice exclaimed: “That’s pretty good, when the Railway Department is yearly squandering thousands of pounds in mismanagement and muddling.” The Chairman: “Tell them to pay their rales and not talk nonsense.”
