PRICES IN THE OLD DAYS.
Prices in the old days of Wellington, said Mr F. P. Wilson, while speaking at a meeting of the historical section of the Philosophical Society, at Wellington on Tuesday evening, were not abnormally high, for the New Zealand Land Company imported the goods and sold thorn at quite reasonable rates. Some of the charges made were: Rum, 8s per gallon; gin, 7s per gallon; ease gin, 4 gallons, £1 Is; brandy, first quality, 17s per gallon; porter, in bottles, £1 per dozen; ale, in bottles, £1 per dozen; sherry, per dozen, £1 ss; sugar, Mauritius, £2 5s per cwt.; refined loaf sugar, Is Id per lb.; coffee, Java, Is 3d per lb.;, tobacco, Negrohead, 2s per II).; cigars, Manila, £5 per 1,000; salt (Liverpool), £9 per ton (about Id per II).); Yorkshire hams, .Is Id per ib.; Irish butter, Is Od ped lb.; potatoes (New Zealand), £8 per ton; cheese (Cheshire), Is 3d per lb.; pickles, assorted, £1 2s per dozen quarts; beef, fresh, carcase, per lb. Is; mutton, Is per lb.; pork, .Is per lb.; Hour, £4O per. Ion; milk, 3d per pint; planks, Kis per Hit) ft. .Mechanic's, received £.l. Uis per week, and labourers £1 Bs,
