HIGH SPEED LINER.
AQUITANIA’S NEW RECORD,
New York, August 9
The Canard liner Aquitania, which sailed from New York on 3ls| -Inly, has created a new record, SJie covered the las! 129 miles to Cherbourg on Friday at an average spinal of 27.4 knots (IDA land miles) an hour.
[The Aquitania, of 45.(147 tons, is the fifth largest steamer. She is classed in Lloyd’s as of between 24 and 25 knots speed. The Mauretania is the fastest liner in existence, ami is classed at “25-1 knots. The Aqnilania's increased speed is pro-' hably due to mechanical improvements made during the extensive overhaul carried out since she concluded her war service. The new record is probably not of a kind to he neeepted as official. In any ease it is below what the .Mauretania has done in a full day’s run, for she covered (17ti knots on 25th January, .1911—an average of over 28 knots.]
