IMPROVING THE BREED.
Some interjection in. regard to Sir George Clifford was made in the House of Representatives on Wednesday night, while Mr L. M, Isitt (Christchurch North) was making one of: his characteristically vigorous anti-gambling speeches. “Sir George Clifford?” retorted Mr Isitt. “He’s the man who advocates the breeding of long-legged, herringgutted Aveeds, which have to be doped with arsenic to run two furlongs, in the hope of maintaining or improving the horses available for our cavalry 1” Mr Isitt Avas proceeding to add some more enlightening remarks as to the weight-car-rying capacity of the horses lie Avas discussing, Avhen Mr Speaker broke in to the effect that he Avas afraid the intcrjectors Avero taking the honourable gentleman slightly uAAmy from the Bill under discussion. Later Mr H, M, Campbell (HaAvkes Bay) . referred to this and similar criticism. In rebuttal, he quoted General Allcuby’s reference to the splendid Avay in which the thoroughbreds came through the ordeal of the lighting in Palestine.
