'Yachting circles in Ncav York are agitating for new, rules for Hilaire races, whemmder there will he no time allowance, no matter what flie size of Ihi' vessels, provided both are built Avithin certain limits. It is pointed out that the sporting value of the races would thus be enhanced. It is understood that in the event of the Shamrock Avinning the Cup, the New York Yacht Club is prepared to challenge the Royal Ulster Yacht Chib for a scries of races .with 115 ft. schooners.

A cable message dated New York, 22nd July, which failed to ho delivered in Wellington, but was published in Auckland, explains the curious discrepancy between the earlier reports and the relative positions of the yachts in the contest. The message says:—The third heat for the America Cup, sailed on Wednesday, was won by the Cup defender, Resolute, which thus achieved her first; win, the Shamrock having won the first two. The announcement that the Resolute had won the second heat as a result, of the extension of her lime allowance was due to a. misapprehension. The increased allowance applied to the third race, not the second, the Shamrock’s topsail being changed after she had won the second heat with 2 min. 20 sec. in hand, a result which still stands, leaving the position, Shamrock 2 wins, Resolute 1, with two races to go. In the third race both yachts took the same time to a second to cover the course, so that the Resolute won by her time allowance of 7 min. 1 see.
