COMBATING CENTRALISATION.
SUBURBAN AREA NOT WANTED,
A few months ago the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce put forward a proposal for the establishment of a suburban area in the country districts adjacent to Palmerston, including Ueilding, Woodville, Uoxlon, Shannon and Levin, with the object of getting the Railway Department to allow a cheap rate of (ravelling from these centres to Palmerston for the benefit of the business people there. Naturally, the outside districts concerned did not approve of the proposal, and strong opposition was set up. The matter was taken further on Wednesday, when a conference of delegates from the districts concerned was held at: Uoxton. 'Mr James Barr, president of the Uoxton Chamber of Commerce, presided, and delegates were present from the Ueilding, Levin, Woodville, Pahiatua and Uoxton Chambers, and lh ( « MK . Uoxton, Levin, and Shannon ugh Councils.
After brief discussion a resolution was carried that the Conference bring under the notice of the proper authorities the attempt of the Palmerston North business people to centralise the trade of the district, and to enter a strong objection to the proposal, -instancing the had effect of the scheme in Australia, and asking the authorities before anything was done in this direction to carefully consider the matter in. all its bearings. The chairman stressed the necessity of the districts represented standing together in all matters affecting (heir interests, and if at any time Uoxton was aide to help any of the other centres, they would be happy to do so. These sentiments were warmly endorsed by the other delegates prosent.—^pbroniele.
