MARRIAGE ACT AMENDMENT.
The -claim for a reduction of, working hours is , apparently not supported by ministers Avho arc authorised to officiate under the Marriage Act, for one clause of the Marriage Amendment Bill read a second lime in the House of Representatives on Thursday extends the hours within Avhich marriages may lie solemnised from 8 to 12. They are now to he 8 a.m. to 8 pan., instead of 8 a.m. lo 1 p.m. Marriages may be celebrated in the registrar’s office at any time that the office is open “for transaction of public business.”* The Bill also provides that Avoracn may he appointed registrars of marriages, that notice of dissolution of marriage shall he entered in the register-hook, and that officers of the Salvation Army shall he officiating ministers under the Marriage Act. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. G. J. Anderson) explained that it had been suggested to him that the three days’ residence provision in the original Act should he abolished, and lie Avould have inquiries made upon the point.
