ALLEGED IMPOSITION.

LAW SLT IX MOTION'

AX I XTFRRI’FTKD TRIP

The generosity of’ flu-' A\ angaiun puhlie in giving aid in neeessilous c;i,s(> is proverbial. bn 1 il is In in' feared ihere arc oeeasions when philanl hrupie people are imposed upon.

Reeeiiflv there wns in Wanganui n limn with his wife and live children. Th<‘ man appeared In he unfort mm le, two incidents being n lire on his business premises nud n consultation with his creditors. Things appeared to go badly with the family, so much so that the Roman Catholic Church authorities gave assistance, likewise the Charitable Aid Board. Several attempts were made to place the man at work, but for some reason or other he did not make much headway in that direction. Both the man and his wife had plausible tongues, and their combined tearful plea was unresistiblo when they sought monetary assistance.

Finally it was decided to send the stranded family across to Tasmania, ■whence they came, and the necessary financial help was arranged, with the result that last Wednesday the family left Wanganui for Wellington.

Shortly after their departure there were several disquieting rumours. It is alleged that just before going.

the man, in a .spirit of bravado, produced at a local boardinghouse a roll of notes of (dose on £3OO in value as proof that he was not in the destitute circumstances that people imagined. The upshot was that the Charitable Aid authorities took the matter up, and yesterday the police at Wellington intervened just as the family was about to leave for Australia.

This development will probably be of considerable interest to local people who gave assistance purely from philanthropic motives. On the other hand, il* it is proved that the man has the amount of money that is alleged, in his possession, the Charitable Aid authorities may be able to take up the matter in another direction. —Wanganui Chronicle.
