He considered that the exnendiliire of a huge stint of
monev on litis work wa- not 01 the
national interest, and m-tead ol
-.pending money in this way it would be better to de\ole same to the eontraction of the l.evin-Marlon deviation, which would obviate the congest ion on (he present Welhngioni’almciston line, which, unless tins deviation were made, would have to be duplicated in the near future, lie considered that the expenditure proposed at Palmerston North should he opposed, and every etlort made to get the Levin-Manmt deviation authorised.
Ollier speakers expressed the opinion that it would be unwise to adopt a “dog in the manger" attitude in coimeetion with ihe Pal-mer-ton proposals, but that they should eom-eiilrate on the LevinMavlon deviation. After eonsiderable discussion it was unanimously derided that a conference, of delegates o! local boilies and Chamber- of Commerce in liie area aiP Wi ied be held at tlie* earliest opp« vtunity to go fully into i he ijnesl ion.
