SERIOUS CHARGE.

A serious charge was laid against Walter Edward Cook, an officer of the Ordnance Department, at the Wellington Magistrate's Court on Saturday. In outlining the case and explaining the charge —the theft of £2 11s 9d, the property of the Government —Detectivc->Scrt. I.ewis ■said that it had been a part of the accused’s duty to audit certain accounts regarding the sale of blankets, It was alleged that the man had altered a number of dockets, pocketed a part of the money, and then forwarded the altered dockets. The total sum involved was about £177. Mr E. Page, S.M., granted a remand till Thursday on the application of the police, and fixed bail at £15,0, with sureties of a like amount.
