PALMERSTON RAILWAY DEVIATION.
DETAILS in connect ion with the proposal to remove the Palmerston railway station from its present silo to more open country on the western boundary of I lie borough have already appeared in these columns. The diversion will require special legislation, which will be submitted to next session of Parliament. 'From a Palmerston point of view there will be no serious opposition to (lie proposals. In fact, lint present state of things is a barrier to Palmerston's- pro gross, and the cramped accommodation at the Palmerston yards to meet the ever increasing trallic has been, and is now, a source of continual worry to the Departmental heads. 'From a district point of view, however, the proposal will revive the agitation for the linking up of the .Main Trunk line between Marlon or Great ford and Levin. We understand that a conference of local body delegates will meet at an early' date to revive the agitation. Mayor Nash hinted at a recent meeting of the Palmerston Council, when the General manager’s proposals were submitted, that local opposition to the scheme might result in Palmerston being “side-tracked.” Me do not think any reasonable person would object hgthe diversion of the line from the (-(nitre of Palmerston fur> reasons that are self-evident, hut there may be very good reasons for objecting to the expenditure oi a huge sum of money in Palmerston when the congest ion could lie relieved and a huge annual saving effected in haulage, by linking up the Main Trunk line. The one is a local need, but the latter is a subject that will have to be looked at from a. national point of view, and now is the time for action.
