BREACH OF LICENSING ACT.
CONVICTION ENTERED
At yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., Thomas Curran, licensee of the Family Hotel, Fox ton, was charged with (1) on May Bth, during the time licensed premises are required by law to bee losed, did keet) open sueb premises for the sale of liquor, and (2) with .selling liquor at a time when the premises are reunired fo be closed.
Mr Cooper appeared for defendant, who pleaded guilty. Counsel read defendant’s record in connection with the recent war, and said it was most unfortunate that a man with such a splendid record at the front should find himself in the. position of being compelled to sell oul bis interests in the hotel. The purchaser, Mr Sbepperd, had already taken possession, and under these circumstances Mr Cooper asked that no endorsement of the license should be made.
The police, stated (hat as defendant was pleading guilty they would withdraw the charge of keeping tiie premises open alter hours. As both charges arose out <>f the same set of circumstances.
The Magistrate convicted defendant, and lined him £lO, with costs 7s, and said that under the circumstances the license would not be endorsed.
