BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
(To the Editor.) Sir. —in Tuesday's ‘‘Herald” you make reference to the Beautifying Society, and express the hope that the public will support it in an attempt to beautify our reserves or present grazing- paddocks. The Foxion reserves are about the most neglected places in the town, and if we had to depend upon the Council to make them attractive, well. Sir, I don't think they would do much, as it takes them all their lime to patch the roads. The generous gift by Mr A. S. Easton of the piece of land in the heart of the town could be converted into a place of beauty. There is room for swimming- baths, a band rotunda, croquet and tennis courts, shrubberies and garden idols. A place where women and children could enjoy themselves amidst pleasant surroundings, and whore the Borough Band could discourse musical programmes on occaison. Xow, Sir, T take it that this is the object of the Beautifying Society, but if it is loft to the Borough Council 1 don’t think much progress will lie made. Could not the Council give the Society a free hand to carry out the work of beautifying, and subsidise the money raised £ for £, apart from the. band rotunda and baths. If two bodies are going to act, there is bound to be confusion. 1 hope, Sir, that the Council will give the Society a, free hand, as there is not much time to lose if anything is to be done this season. —Yours, ele.,
. PROGRESS. [THE first point, to remember .is that the control of the reserves is in the hands of the Council, and nothing can be done without the approval and sanction of the Co-
uncil. We see no obstacle in the way of united effort. The Reserves Committee of the Council, in conjunction with the Society,
could lay down a policy and unite in carrying it out. A conference with this object in view could easily be arranged.—Ed. IT.]
