WHARF TROUBLE AT WANGANUI.
The wharf trouble at Wanganui is receiving every possible attention at the hands of the authorities, telegraphs The Post’s Wanganui correspondent, but the dog-in-the-raan-ger attitude of the Railway Department, which owns the sheds at the Town ■ Wharf, is preventing the trade of the port developing as if should, and is causing all kinds of inconvenience to people of Wanganui and the Main Trunk districts, extending as far south as Palmerston North, which the port of Wanganui serves. The opinion is held in certain circles that influences are •moving in the direction of centralising shipping at Wellington, and it is felt that some drastic action should be token to end the present unsatisfactory conditions caused mainly by Hie action of the Railway Department. A local firm has just received advice from a Christchurch maniffacfurcr to the effect that the Canterbury Company had informed the Southern merchant (hat until facilities oir the shed and wharf were improved the shipping company would refuse to go to Wanganui. The writer.of the letter staled that he had fifty or sixty tons of cargo at Lyttelon for shipment to Wanganui. On the other hand, it is contended that the Southern shipowners are making the most of itfor some purpose or other, and in support a local commercial man said to-day that there Avere many complaints about delay in receiving cargo from the South. Congestion Avas reported to be prevalent at Lyttelton and other Southern ports, and why Wanganui alone avus singled out for criticism on this matter Avas a point that was not understandable at present. Congestion certainly took place when South Island boats arrived simultaneously, or nearly so, Avilh full cargoes, and it is felt that Avith a little arrangement at the other'end the congestion hero Avould, to a great extent,'he obviated.
