SECRET OF THE ATOM.
RESEARCH STUDENT’S DISCOVERY. - In the Cambridge laboratory of Professor Sir E. Rutherford—the arch-priest of the atom —Dr. Aston, a research student, has made some discoveries which bring us a step nearer to ‘The moaning of matter.” Like Professor Einstein, he has caught light bending. - He has Liken u number 'of so-called elements, ouch as lead and hydrogen and helipm. and discovered, partly .through the bonding of the light from them, that' their, atoms., are not identical, as they seem to the chemists, but in some cases of throe or four distinct varieties. Such beautiful electro-magnetic and light apparatus has now been perfected in the lahorato'ry that the new; physicist there can look into the very sou! of the-minutest particle or atom of any substance. .Such ’delicacy of observation was never before dreamt of.
