Jazz, luxurious dinners, plenty of shows and late hours, together with easy jobs at high wages, threaten to cause a labour shortage on Canadian farms this year, which may further increase living costs. Tempting offers hy grain farmers in the grain belt are meeting with little response, and unless male help is obtained shortly, farmers will have to work night and day to get in their crops. “There is a very great Labour shortage on the farms,” said Mr C. S. Boyd, head of an employment agency. “We receive fifty orders for farm hands daily, and are only able to fill ten. The jobs pay from 50 to 80 dollars a month, with room, hoard, and'washing. This is an increase of 25 per cent, over last year. Jobs for married couples pay over 100 dollars a month, and they are given a house, garden and cow.” “Lack of farm labour is caused by the fad that; the saloons are dosed and the labourers have lots of money,” said Sam Cummings, a farm labour agent. “They can get five dollars a day and city life attracts them. With plenty of money to spend they don’t cafe to give up life in the city.”
