FATAL MOTOR COLLISION AT SANDON.
WELL-KNOWN SETTLER KILLED. OCCUPANTS OK CARS SERIOUSLY INI UR ED. . A fatal motor accident occurred on the main Palmerston North-Wan-ganui road, near Sandon, on Thursday evening, when two cars collided with disastrous consequences, resulting in the death of Mr Arthur E. Eglinton, of Sandon. Mr E. A. Penny, of the same township, was seriously injured. The disaster happened shortly after six o’clock, when cars were returning south from the races at Wanganui. Mr Eglinton, who was returning from Palmerston North in a Buick car, was raking Mr and Mrs A’Court and Mr Penny to their homes in Sandon. About half a mile from the township (opposite the property of Mr J. Harris) thi car collided with another Buick, returning from the races, and driven by Mr Warren Nowth, a Palmerston North taxi-pn>prietor.
Although the road at the scene of Hie accident is wide and almost straight, the impact occurred with such terrific force that both cars were reduced tit hopeless wreckage. The taxi-car struck Mr Eglinfon’s a glancing blow, the rear portion being practically lorn oil, and entirely stripped of its hack wheels and differential gear. fortunately assistance was soon at hand, with the arrival of other motorists on the scene. Mr Xewth’s car had slewed right found and across (lie road, with its radiator and front wheels shattered, and hood and body battered and bent. The other vehicle bad continued on its course and drawn up past the Palmerston car, facing the opposite hedge. It was so smashed as to be resting almost on the ground with only one wheel remaining. Mr Eglinton, whoso neck was broken, was evidently killed instantaneously, while Mr Penny, who occupied the back seat-behind the. driver, was found to bo sntVei’ing from a fractured skull and a leg broken in two places. Mr and Mrs A’Court escaped almost unhurt..
In the other car there were six t,ecu pants —Messrs W . Newth, B. haircloth, Powell, Kidman, McConkev and Rendle, of Palmerston .North, all of whom were more or less injured. Newth was found lying- unconscious on the front seat of his car, bleeding freely from wounds m the head. - Of his companions haircloth seems to have suffered least. Mr McConkey, the, proprietor of the Kosy Lounge in Pa I m ei’s lon X o rll l ,' wasseve re Iy. c u!: and only recovered consciousness when brought into town. Mr Powell, who is the well-known proprietor of tile Railway Buffet, suffered very severely from lacerations and gashes on the scalp and face. Mr Kidman, a resident at the Railway Buffet, was taken to the hospital suffering from shock and loss of blood. The other occupant, a postal employee named Rendle, received bruises about the face and body. Medical aid from Bulls and Palmerston was procured for those whose .condition seemed 100 serious, to warrant th.eir immediate removal, and the Palmerston North ambulance afterwards went out to bring Penny to the hospital. Mr Kglinton was a member of a well-known farming family. He was a son of Mrs and the late Mv D. Eglinton, of Palmerston .North, and leaves a widow and a son and daughter. Two brothers, Messrs K. \\. and B. T. Kglinton, reside at Rangintu, two others, Messrs B. ('. and X. S. Kglinton, on Rangitikei Line, and another, Mr T. d. Kglinton, at Kairanga. Mr Kglinton had also four married sisters. Mesdames T\, Bye red j and A. Tregurlha, Palmerston North,.- Bishop (Rongolea), and \V. Draco (Wanganui). Mr Penny is about 59 years of age, a single man, and is the second son of Mrs and the late Mr B. S. Penny, of Carnarvon, being a brother of Mr W. Strode Penny, of Sandon.
The accident happened only a hundred yards past, the gate of -Mr Eglintoirs home, which lie had just left, after stopping to allow his son to alight from the car.
MR. PENNY SUCCUMBS. Palmerston N., May 21. Mr E. H. Penny, who was injured in the motor smash, died to-night.
