THE HOUSE SHORTAGE.
CABINET MAKES A DECISION. ONLY ESSENTIAL WORK TO PROCEED. The shortage of houses throughout Ihe Dominion has become so acute that Cabinet has agreed, in an effort to aid the rapid const ruction „f buildings, that in future practically only essential buildings are to proceed. A brief’ auuonneemenl lo this effect was made by the Prune '.Minister at Wellington yesterday, but no details of ihe means of carrying the decision into elteet: were nvailable. A full statement, however, may be expected. The decision of Cabinet will not apply, of course, lo buildings already in course of construction. P. is understood that no new legislation will be needed to give effect to the proposal, but that advantage wdl be taken of n War Regulation which makes it necessary for the approval of the 'Minister of Finance to be secured when the erection of a building costing more than £3,500 is contemplated. The new conditions are expected to come into force almost immediately.
