ADVANCES TO SOLDIERS.
A SLOWING DOWN. • For the past two or three day’s (here has been much concern among returned soldiers caused by the nnmmneejiient made by Mr Gut brio that there would have to be a reduction or a complete stoppage in I la 1 granting of loans to soldiers for the purchase of property. A' deputation from the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association, with Mr IV. Perry, the new chairman, waited on the Prime Minister yesterday' to discuss with him this prevailing idea that advances for the purpose of placing soldiers on the land, or of finding homes for them in the centres of population, have been stopped or are. about to be stopped. Air Massey explained to them that nothing of the sort was intended, that it had become necessary merely' to slow down, and that it was impossible for (he Government to go on finding money' at the rate of over a million a month, as it bad found it for (lie past eight months. Air Massey said that the Government would go on quite steadily, taking commitments first, and when the House met sufficient authority 7 would be asked for and obtained to keep the Department going.
