Alichael Dcniichy was fined £SO at Gisborne, in default six months’ imprisonment, as the occupier of a house used for gambling. Charles Croon was fined £IOO for keeping premises for belting, anil ordered to come up for sentence on another charge of frequenting the roadway for betting purposes, the sent cnee being conditional on his leaving the district. Arthur Owen, on two charges of gaming in the street, was fined £IOO and ordered to come np for sentence on July 201 h on other charges.

A daring, though short-lived, escape from custody was made on Thursday afternoon last by an habitual criminal named William Frederick Alurray. He was in charge of two warders on the Alain Trunk express from Wellington to Auckland, and when the train was nearing Mangere made an excuse to go to the lavatory. He locked the door between himself and the warders, and, breaking the window glass, jumped from the (rain, which was proceeding at full speed, Alurray, who was badly cut about the head and .body, was-subsequently easily recaptured. The escapee had oniv .recently been re-arrested in the Duller Valley after having escaped from Mount Eden gaol on January 10th. ”

Tiie departure from Auckland of the Prince of Wales for Rotorua by train on Monday gave rise to a scene of wild enthusiasm. Unusual interest prevailed in connection with the ■ election of a commit lee for the Woodvilie School • t Hie annual meeting of householders at Woodvilie last Monday. A hi!o back the Woodlands road school was closed, and the pupils transferred to the main town school. Smarting under what'they considered was an injustice, the former householders' of Woodlands Road School attended in large numbers (lie meeting, and practically pat last year's commit lee out of office. The new committee elected was: Messrs Elder, Turnbull, Richards, Morgan, McKinlay, Wendlc, Signal, Graham and Wardrop. The defeated members of the retiring committee were Messrs If. Bnrneil, E. Harding, Grinlinlon, and Rev. Keail. Mr Burnett had been chairman of the committee for 20 years past. A fresh sensation was caused when the new committee met to elect a chairman. Messrs Elder, Turnbull and Graham resigned as a protest against the ireutmenl accorded to Mr Burnett. A vole of thanks' was passed by the meeting to Mi' Burnell for bis past services, but Mr Burnell considered that tin' vole was out of place, as it was not a true expression of opinion of the meeting.
