A fire at Ekelaliuna yesterday destroyed property in the Main Street valued at £12,909.
Air J. Edie (Liberal) defeated Mr J. Bcgg (Reform) in the Bruce byelection yesterday, by 152 voles. The totals were, 80gg5'2,255, Edie 2.497
A report of the sermon preached by the Rev. Thos. Halliday in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday last, on Dm subject “What's Wrong with Foxtail?” appears on our fourth page.

Mr Endell Wanklyn has lendercd his resignation as secretary to Dm Pox ton Racing Club, and Mr Freeman Juts been appointed to temporarily fill the position.
During the past week or two between 3,909 ami 4,900 bales of hemp have been sent away from Die local grading stores for shipment abroad. Of this quantity over 2,000 bales were railed to Auckland for shipment by the Canadian Raider, which leaves that port next week for San F ran cisco.
Orchard-robbing is very rife in Palmerston North at the present time, and in some instances trees have literally been stripped of Dmiv fruit. A ’close watch is being kept in one locality, where the are promised a warm reception if they return for another load of fruit, says Dm Standard.
, At Monday night's meeting .of the Borough Council a motion was passed expressing the Councilus thanks to the staff for their faithful services duing Dm past year. The Mayor said that the Council was very fortunate in having such an excellent staff. He wished particularly to refer to the work of the Town Clerk, who had carried out his duties in an exemplary manner. Cr. Me Murray also referred in eulogistic terms to Mr Trueman’s work'. Mr Trueman briefly thanked the Council for the appreciative references that had been made, and said that he would continue to do his best.
•At Monday night’s Council meeting, in accordance with notice given, Cr. Coley moved to rescind the motion passed at a recent meeting granting the School Committee a refund of half the sanitation charges made by the Council for the past year. Asked his object in asking for the motion to be rescinded, Cr. Coley said that if same were done he would then move that the whole of the sanitation charges .be refunded. Crs. MeMurray and Thompson also spoke in support of remitting the whole amount. On a vote being taken, Cr. Coley’s motion was defeated, the voting being:—For: Crs. Coley,- Thompson, Parkin,-and Me Murray. Accounts amounting 'to £484 17s 5d were passed for payment at Mon* day night’s meeting of the Borough Council
Members of the Presbyterian Ladies’ Social Guild were entertained by Mrs B. Withers, at her residence on Tuesday afternoon. A very enjoyable lime was spent. Bertie Smith, the'Wellington grocer charged with profiteering in selling Mellins’ food at 3.s 9d a bottle, a gross profit of (54 per cent., was fined £IOO, and £7 costs.
Several members of the local Masonic Lodge were present at the installation of Bro. Tucker as W.M. of Lodge Manawatu Kilwinning, and investiture of his officers, at Palmerston North last night.
The annual meeting of the Foxton Patriotic Society will be held in the Council Chamber on Thursday, the 29th instant, at 8 p.m. Business; To receive annual report and balancesheet, election of officers, and general.

Mr G. Mercer, father of Mr L. Mercer, of the “Herald” staff, met with a serious accident at Patea iast Saturday. He was struck fin the head by the arm of a crane at the wharf, which inflicted a serious injury, necessitating an immediate operation. He is reported to he progressing satisfactorily. It is questionable whether the Masonic Hall, in which'(he annual meeting of householders is to he held oirMonday night, will provide sufficient accommodation for 1 lie purpose, owing to it being occupied as temporary premises by the C. M. Boss Co. Arrangements should have boon made for Die use of the Town Hal! supper-room for the purpose, in fact, it is not too late to have the transfer made before Monday.
At Monday night’s Council meeting Mr F. 8. Easton made applieaDon for permission to construct a concrete culvert 18ft, wide over the Awahou drain in Johnston Street. — It was pointed out flint the Council recently put a culvert over the drain lower down Die street, and same was 24 feet wide. It was decided to grant permission, provided the length of the culvert was increased to 24 feet.
The Prince of Wales, with the members of his personal stall, will stay at Government House during his visit to Wellington. The battlecruiser Renown will he in port, and it is anticipated that many members of the Royal party will use their headquarters on hoard Die sllijr. The Government has engaged accommodation at an hotel for members of the party who may wish to use ((Harters ashore.
At Monday night's Council meeting Mr M. E. Perreau, on behalf of Die School Committee, wailed on the Council with the request that a footpath be formed .from near the Triangle, in Main Street, along the west side of Park Street to the northern boundary of the school property. Mr .Perreau said that in the winter time this portion of the street, being low-lying, got very we!, and Die children were liable to get their feet wet on their way to school—The Council decided to refer the njuest to Die Works Committee for a report.
