Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 1920. MAN’S NATURAL DIET.
Dr. J. S. REEKIE, in a lociurr nl Auckland, on “Mnn's Natural Dirt,” as indicated by Ids internal structure, said man was classified in Ilia! group of animals styled frugivorons, that is, living on fruits and vegetable products. Since the. X-ray apparatus had enabled us to (race the passage of food, it had been possible to exactly gauge the degrees of digestibility of foods. Tim two important elements were first the action of chewing, and secondly the proportion' of cellulose in the food. This, .he said, should be enough to show that .man should be a vegetable consuming animal, for there was no cellulose in meat. Nature indicated by man's structure that he should be a vegetarian. The lecturer dealt with the various constituents in food, in reply to questions, Dr. Reekie emphasised the great danger of over-eating; expressed the opinion that the banana has a greater food value than the potato; and denounced the foolishness of removing the best qualities of wheat in manufacturing baker's bread.
