Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, MARCH 11, 1920. THE STREET LAMPS.
IX order to husband the coal supply at the gas works, the Borough Council lor several nionllis past have not lit tin 1 street lamps. The failure to “lighten the darkness'' in several streets lias called Coriil protests from a numher of residents, and one oi' two minor accidents have been alleged attains! (he darkness, and the Council's caution and .economy. As poitned out by the .Mayor at las! Council nicotine 1 , this precaution had to lie taken, otherwise it might have been necessary to res!riel (he consumption for household purposes. The Council look a risk in cutting oft the street lamps, but it decided upon' what it considered the lesser of two evils. However, a note from the Westport Coal Company justifies the Council's net ion in large measure. The Company writing on the Blh insl,, says “Owing to the prevalence of intiuenza at the mines there will be no cargo available for Wellington Ibis week. I regret that alder the small cargo now discharging ex s.s, ‘l\omala’ no immediate supplies are in sight, and would therefore earnestly recommend that your stocks he conserved as much as possible.” Under the circumstances we hope the citizens will view the temporary cutting off of the street light in the right spirit. As soon as stocks are available the street lamps will‘be again relit.
