Cooksley to widen 5? chains of side (‘lilting formation on Palmer.-lon-Foxton road, ami to sod, clay and metal the same length for £4O. This work is now being proceeded, with. General. —As requested by (ho Council, I approached Mr \A . Bnrne with reference to selling three acres of land to (he Council at Rodina siding for the purpose of building a lineman’s cottage '(hereon. Alter some little discussion Mr .Bnrne agreed (o sell the land tor the sum of £SO per acre. The quality ol the land .is good, and I would recommend (he Council to purchase the three acres required. As instructed by the Conned, 1 have purchased a 12-li.p. compound port aideengine, with a working pre.-sure of KiOlhs, The engine is in good order throughout, and is capable of driving the crusher at half the working pressure. Wire Rope Ways: Owing to the increased eo-t of hauling and producing crushed metal, I was directed by the Conned to report on (lie question ot wire rope ways for hauling metal to the crusher. There are several systems of aerial rope ways, namely, the single running rope, the single fixed rope, and Hie two fixed parallel ropes with an endless running hauling rope. The circumstances which should decide the typo of rope way to he used are as follows: —(1) The character of the country which has to be traversml; (2) the class of the materials to lie transported; (3) (he manner in which such materials can be packed; (4) the motive [lower available; (5) (he inclines to be surmounted; (C) the spans to be crossed; (7) the quantity of material to be carried pier day. Ip dealing with question No. 1, the character 1 of the country is quite suitable for an aerial rope way. Nos. 2 and B: the material will lie packed and transported in iron carriers without any difficulty. No. 4: the motive power required for, hauling 209 tuns per day will lie about an S-li.p. steam, engine. No. 5: (he inclines from a survey I have made recently will he about 1 in 8. No. (i: Hie spans will not interfere in any way, as malerial can he carried on spans up to (;00 feet or over at the rate of 500 tons per day. No. 7: Hie quantity of material required per day' al the present time is approximately 100 tons, but it would be advisable to

make provision for double tins (juantily. I have made up an approximate cost of working' an aerial rope wav such as will suit our requirements as follows : —four men for loading earners, one for tipping carrier,', one man for feeding crusher. Two teams for scooping metal on river bed to the loading bank, engine driver, cost of running engine and wear and tear of wire rope and other machinery, al a total cost of its ( dd per yard. Our present contract is for 8,000 yards at (is 3d per yard. The saving on this contract alone would be 2s (id per yard, a total saving of £IOOO. As mentioned above, aerial rope ways of the fixed type are subdivisable into three idasses, in which two parallel lived ropes are used, upon which carriers arc arranged to run and arc drawn along by means of a hauling rope; this forms a desirable •arrangement, and is most suitable lor our requirements. Over 500 tons ol material can be transported per day ami whore the individual loads weigh up io or over (icwf, the incline may exceed 1 in S, and rhe spans up to 1.000 feel, so there will be no difficulty in the way of spanning the Rangilikei river. The cost of installing an aerial rope way of the above type ami length as required for our purposes was .some few years back about £J,OOO. To-day it would cost approximately £2,500. A wire rope way was installed by an engineer of Great Britain, and was worked continuously for two years; it was then lakeu down as it was thought it had done enough work. This was not the case, as is shown by flit' laid ‘dial the breaking strain of the rope, when new, was 20 lons .1 Cwl, and after two years’ work and hauling 1(15.000 lons of iron ore. (be breaking strain was found to be 27.. 1 , tons. A walnut-Riding. —f have arranged with Mr Walker to supply and deliver metal from N T ye s pit for the \\ hirokino road for the sum ol 0s ; per \ard. About 10 yards have been delivered, and 1 have arranged for another 50 yards at (lie same price. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT 'file tramway manage;.' reported on the working ol I lie tramway lor the month of February;—The traf(ie was good, the (duel items being as follows :—General merchandise 121', lons, cheese and butler 140:; tons, grass seed 18! tons, minerals and manure Jo I lons, sheep 00 (nudes, timber 11.300 loci, fares amounted to Co 2s 2d. The working account shows a credit balance ol Cl 7 15s 2d for the month, but the cos! of new rads and fastenings, and sleepers which have come to iiami during (be month, amounting to £.lOl 0s 2d. has not been included bi the expenditure. Mela!. —('rushed metal is al present being delivered on the Government line between lliiuaiangi and b’angiolu, and at various sidings on our own lino. RESOLUTIONS. 'Hie following resolutions were carried: — ,- i'uni (Crs. Manure.ud —Hunt) the roadmen's wages be increased to 12-: per day. Thai (Benny —Phillips) -I. G. Clark' be appointed registrar id dogs, with Dower to appoint suo-coi-!(■(■!ors. fee 2s (id for sheep dogs, and Ids for ol tiers. Thai (Hunt— I'billips) the Council authorises raising a special loan ~r £2,000 for erection of workers’ dwellings, such loan. to. be tor a period of 304 years at 4 4 per cent, per annum.' a~-.
