CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annuak general .meeting of members of the Foxton Cimmber of Commerce was held last . night. There were 20 members present, Mr M. E. Perreau- (president) occupying the chair. The annual report, as follows, was read and adopted: : — “Most of you were present in this room oh the sixth of February, 1919, when, with the kind assistance of Mr j. A. Nash, M.P., and Mr McKenzie, secretary of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, this Chamber was/ormed. Twelve months have elapsed since then, and your Committee have now pleasure in submitting their report, for the period during which they have held office. Your Committee has worked with the object of doing its utmost to further the interests and promote the welfare of the town and district of Foxton. “The first work of the Committee was to have Rules framed and printed, and a copy has been sent to each member of the Chamber. Steps were also taken to have (he Chamber incorporated under the Societies Act, 1008, and this has been done, and the Chamber is also affiliated wills the Association of Chambers of Commerce. “Foxton being a port, one of the first essentials to progress is, of course, shipping. Upon the loss of the ‘Queen of the South,’ a special meeting was held, and this Chamber was instrumental in having the s.s. ‘Kennedy’ secured fo carry on tho trade. “The wharf having been taker) over by Ihe Harbour Board, (no Chamber lias been in constant touch’ with (he Board with regard to having the requirements of the port met. The efforts of the Committee have been directed towards numerous matters of local interest in Hus Borough. The Chamber is linked up with (he Mangahao Hydro-Electric League, and regular reporls of progress being made with this work are received. At Iho instigation of your Committee, the Borough Council has procured a most excellent recreation ground in Ihe centre of the (own, also an up-to-dale lirsl aid lire lighting plant. Recommendations regarding many small mailers ol
local importance have also been submitted to.the Borough Council, as the result of which several matters have received prompt attention in.the borough, one of which being (he placing in order of the water pumps at end of . Main Sireel. Whiter and drainage was fully gonq into, and the .Borough Council was requested to submit some scheimi for (he consideration of ratepayers. During the year the local telephone exchange hours have been extended from 7 a.m. to Pi p.m., and at the request of the Council the single ring system lias also been iasialled. Efforts have been made to procure direct telephonic communication with Wellington, but this miml come later, when warranted by more business. A conference ol local bodies was arranged and held regarding the Round Bush. “It has been the constant endeavour of the Committee to have improvements effected in the local railway service. The Council was successful in gelling better accommodation for ('arts at the station. “A deputation from this Chamber recently met the Beach Committee, and matters concerning the improvement of the Beach was gone into. “Enquiry has been made regarding the possibility of establishing the fishing- industry locally under the provisions of the latest enact--1 ment, and further information on this subject is awaited. “A resolution was carried by the Committee in favour of legislation providing for a Dominion Saturday half-holiday. “The Council has spared no efforts to have goatsrne dealt with by controlling bodies, and has also been interested in the question of having an overlknv channel.cut as an outlet) for flood waters of the Manawqtu. “The Government lias been communicated with with the object ol having local lands,opened up lor Soldier settlement, and with other local bodies the attention of the Government has also been drawn to the necessity of having sand drills dealt with. Delegates were appointed to attend the animal eonterenee of Chambers of Commerce held at Wellington last year, where the two. last named matters were further considered and included in the report of the proceedings of the conference, which was forwarded on to the Prime Minister and Members concerned, “Delegates from this Chamber attended a meeting held at Palmers - ton North to consider the question of the formation of a W ollington Provincial Expansion ’ League, which, if formed, the Committee de-_ eicled to support. “The Chamber is indebted to the member for the district for his support whenever solicited; his assistance has been willingly given on numerous occasions, the latest being in the question of the delay in delivery at Foxton of the Levin ana Shannon mails to facilitate sorting of mail for settlers ea route. ' “During the year. Messrs Eraser and Cron quest have resigned as members of Committee, Meskrs Healey a«d A. X. Smith having been 'elected to fill the vacancies, and upon the departure of Mr Waters' Air Bock was appointed hou. auditor. “The retiring Committee wish to record a vote of thanks in appreciation jof their services to Air Moore, lion, solicitor, and Air Bock, hon auditor, and also t 6 the Borough Council for their courtesy in allow-
ing meetings to be held in the Council Chamber. “The membership of the Chamber now stands at sixty, fully paid up, and a statement of receipts and expenditure to date, duly audited, showing a credit balance of £5 14s 4d, :s appended herewith.” Tlie- balance-sheet -showed -that' the receipts, all from, subscriptions, •totalled £3l 10s od, and the expenditure £25 15s Bd, leaving a. creditbalance of £5 14s 4d. The following Council was elected, for the ensuing term; —Messrs Perreau, W. Petrie, John Ross, Barr, Hornhlow, Christie, Furrie, Nye, F. D. Whihley, Moorhouse, Bryant, and U, IV. Robertson. The secretary (Mr F. R. Moorhouse) tendered his resignation, and Mr A. N. .Smith was elected to the position. Mr Perreau referred to the excellent work done by Mr Moorhouse during (lie past year, and said Ilia!) the Chamber-regretted very much that he could not see his way to continue; Mr Barr also spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr MWrhonse’s work, and a mo!ion of appreciation was ordered to be recorded on the minutes. A meeting of (he newly elected Council was held at (he conclusion of the general meeting, when the following officers were elected: — President, Mr J, M. Barr; vice-pre-sident, Mr J. K. Hornhlow; treasurer, JVIr R. Bryant; auditor, Mr W. Bock. In vacating (liechair, Mr Borrcau thanked members of (he Council for their assistance (luring his term of office. The Chamber had accomplished some very good work, and , it was now on a linn fooling, and would no doubt continue to assist in all movements for the progress of the town and district. On the motion of Mr Barr, the retiring president was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for his work during the year. Mr F. R. Moorhouse was appointed to represent the Chamber at tho annual conference of Chambers of Commerce, (o be held in Wellington next week. The following new members worn elected; .Messrs Bergin, W. Rapsford, and F. If. Crawley.
