CARING FOR CARPENTIER.
“MOTHERING” THE FRENCH FIGHTER. Mine. Vanelbroue is the mother-in-law of Carpentier’s manager, M. Dereha mps, and .she went to England to “mother” Georges. With the rest of his entourage (wrote the Daily Mail ,in November) she is staying at the Abercorn Arms, SUfnmore, Middlesex, where she is keeping a very maternal eye on everything. It is not a bit of'use Georges politely pretending that things are “quite all.right, thank yon,” if they are not. He cannot side-step madame. She has known him ever since he was a small boy. The fettle he is in is a splendid testimonial to her mothering. “Georges,” said M, Doschamps, “is not a very big eater, and is not —how call yon ilf —fastidious. He cats what is going, as yon say, most times —beef, mutton —plenty mutton, much, fish and fruit, but sometimes he fancy a little French dish. Perhaps he would like some good French soup, or an omelet te, or special, coffee, bon. Madame la bellemere will then attend to this,” Madame la bellemere takes her basket, gets into a car, and goes a marketing. Sometimes she can get what is necessary in (lie village, sometimes she must; go to London. More than once she has descended upon Covent Garden Market, and returned laden with good things for Georges. And Mine. Vanelvrouc does not: confine her interest only to the domestic side of the French champion’s training. She is keenly interested in his boxing. Site was one of the privileged few permitted to see a very private and confidential bit of sparring.
