THE SUGAR SUPPLY.
THE retail grocers apologetically inform customers that they cannot supply more than a Jew pounds of sugar to each, ami some complain they haven't any in stock at all. Emit in many orchards is rotting' because of the lack of sugar Ho convert it into jam, and the latter is looked upon in many households as a butter economiser. Speaking to a deputation at Wellington yesterday, Mr Massey is reported to have said "aiiyone would think the supply of saga]' had failed utterly, to read Some of the communications 1 receive. 1 have information which shows that certainly the Sugar Company is turning out as much sugar to-day as at any time in its history.” Mr Sykes: ‘’Don’t you think there is hoarding going on somewhere 1 Mr Massey :J cauT explain it any other way. The representative of the company told me that they would he 1 aide to go on at the present rate for the next few months, but beyond that he cotild not say. That depends on the crop growing now. And in this 'respect the strike in Fiji at present is important.” This implies that some one'is holding for a rise, and surely it is the duty of the head of the Government to lay • the culprits by the heel. If the Sugar Company is turning out as much sugar to-day as at any time in fts history, where is it going ? The only inference is Thai, some monopoly is on robbery bent. This is the sort of thing which is causing unrest among the masses, and which will assist in bringing about a big upheaval in the near future. /
