THE SAMOAN PARLIAMENTARY TRIP.
THE Samoan Parliamentary trip is looked upon by a large number of people 'as a piece of deliberate squandering on the part of the Government, and adding farther indebtedness to the c’oimtry; The proposal that members of Parliament should be given an opportunity to visit Samoa was first made during the debate upon the External Affairs Act ■ last session. During the debate a protest was made against the use of indentured labour in Samoa, and members from all parts of the House said it was impossible for them to deal - intelligently with a country of -which they had no first-hand knowledge. Then it was that the Prime Minister said he was prepared to arrange for members to visit Samoa during the recess and study the problems with which they would be called upon to deal. The Government is surely in a position to collect all the data necessary for the information of members in connection with the administration of Samoa without spending several thousands of pounds to provide a picnic, at the taxpayers’ expense!
