THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
FOB some considerable time past Haxmillers have continued milling operations at a loss in the hope of a rising market. This week’s quotations indicate a turn of the tide, which may save several mills from ceasing 'operations; At the Horo-' whenua Show on Thursday, the Prime Minister sounded, an optimistic Pole when referring- to the industry. Mr. Massey mentioned the fact that although large quantities of hemp had been got away from this district, the scarcity of tonnage and the high freights had hampered the industry, but be was glad to say that news had been received of a’considerable rise in the price of this product in the Old Country, while the prospects of an early reduction in freight were good. It is hoped by all concerned in the industry that Mr Massey’s prognostications re freight reductions will be realised.
