THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
The majority of the llaxmills in the Auckland district have resumed operations after, * the holidays, and ii, fai- as the production of fibre is concerned there* is every reason to anticipate an excellent season. In reference to the prospects of the industry generally, it was stated in Auckland last week by a prominent 'business man that no material alteration in the market conditions was anticipated this season. Hie world markets were still heavily 'stockedwith Mexican sisal, and there appeared to Ire little likelihood of these stocks being reduced, as the production was in excess of the present demand. There was also a fairly heavy “carry over” of hinder twine from last season," the partial failure of the harvests having reduced the clemand for twine very much below the normal 'rate. In view of these conditions the immediate prospects of the industry could not be regarded as particularly bright, notwithstanding the recent improved inquiry*; for fibre -from England. Meanwhile the millers were making the most of the fav-. ourable season, and wore carrying on operations under better conditions than usual.
