GOATSRUE.
At vest onlay’s public 'meeting t o c(!iisi«l l“ i’ the questions of. rivci improvements, banking and Hood prevention. the question ol goatsrue was brought tip in .the discussion. Mr Neiison (Tiakitalnma) said Iha! at the meeting held at Palmerston North Mr 11. Akers stated Unit as (In' disease had got into the llax .on his property (Riverdale), and there would be practically no-revenue from that source, he intended to convert it into dairying land, and in order to do so intended banking the whole river frontage. By doing this, they also hoped to stop the spread of goats rue. Air Neiison said that in the past an occasional flood improved the land,.but now they were no good, as goatsrue was spread by the flood waters. Unless something was done to eradicate it, goatsrue would be a .curse to the country.
Mr Pearce (Rangiotn) said that goatsrue was a greater menace than Hooding. Band would not be worth owning in some places owing to the -preitd of goatsrue. ■ Mr (towel' said that- aboutyiwelvc months ago both Mr H. Aker- and Air R. T. Bell informed him that they were banking their properties as a protection against goatsrue.
Mr W. E. Barber considered that iiii overflow channel would be I lie best means of gelling rid of the goalsrne. The seeds would then be lahen right out to sea, instead of being deposited on the low lands ahmg the river, as at present.
