The reports of various mutters dealt with hy the Poxton Harbour Board at their meeting on Tuesday last have been crowded out of this issue, and will appear on Saturday.
A, special meeting of members and intending members of the Poxton Borough Baud will lie held in the Band room on Sunday morning next, at 9.30 o'clock. The monthly silting of the Magis(rate’s Court will he held to-mor-row. The cases set down for hearing include three charges of alleged breaches of the peace, four cases of being found unlawfully on licensed premises, one charge against an hotel licensee for allegedly serving Maoris with liquor on Election Day for Native members, and a number of civil cases. The Poxton Racing Club has forwarded the handsome donation of twcnty-Hvc guineas to (ho fund, for which the Committee desires to express its best thanks. Every week the fund is gradually increasing, and Are are getting nearer the £SOO objective. Don’t, be among the pessimists who said avc Avould not raise £50(1. Of course wo Avill. It would lie a serious relleelioii upon the public of Poxton to think otherwise.
At the close of work for the yon) 1 a pleasing ceremony took place at the local State School on Tuesday, Avhen Mr Fume, head muster, and Mr Gahites, assistant master, were presented Avilh tokens of esteem hy the pupils of Standards \ T . and VI. Those took the form in the lirst instance of air 'inkstand and smoker’s out lit, and in the second case of a volume of LongfelloAv’s poems and a leather pocket hook. The recipients acknowledged the gifts feelingly, ahd expressed their hearty appreciation of the kind thoughts Avhicli prompted the action.
Mr C. J. Dennis’ ‘‘Sentimental Bloke,” which is to he presented at the Royal Theatre on Tuesday next, under the aegis of Mr E. J, Carroll, has many things to commend it, apari from the things that only appeal to palates sensitive to the subtle flavours of literature. It is a story (hat uplifts without preaching. It is simple, effective, natural, sweet, and quite a convincing love story. It appeals directly to those bettor feelings of the human heart: that run deepest. It: is a story for young and old, for folk of all temperaments and dispositions, and circumstances. And the Him expresses the story perfectly. It is the one big lilm made in Australia, the only one that is big in the big way. The acting is so remarkably good that it never seems like acting. The atmosphere and local colours are correct and beyond all possibility of cavil. It is an achievement, this lilm. It Ilirills and stimulates, like -an ideal tonic. It gives new life to hopes long weary, to faith long dormant.. The poem in speech is still a poem of photography. If sterling Avorlh and parity count for anything, if genuine human interest is the tiling that speaks to you, here is the finest film that ever came to the Dominion. Special appropriate music accompanies the product ion, which .will he presented on' a scale in keeping with its importance.’
