The hollowing eaidegram daled ITlh December, has been received by Ihe Government Astronomer from the Director-General of Agriculture, al Siiya :--“A let lor published in the loeai press from Clement Wrag'ge predicting violent seismic disturbances, commencing about December 17th, has aroused considerable ularm. This Government would appreciate any information you could supply by cable on the matter.” Mr Hogben, Government .-ftTtMi'felogist, having been asked foi views on (be matter, has submitted'' the following report to the Governmeat: —“It has been proved again and again dial sun spots and oilier astronomical phenomena do not cause earthquakes. The causes of earthquakes are within the earth, not outside it. It would be a mere chance coincidence even it one of Ihe big earthquakes that are con-, stantly happening were to Jail ony ,17th December. No one can 1 ore tony earthquakes in the way that Clement Wragge. claims to do, therefore, there is no special cause lor alarm on the 17th,' and this information Sir Francis 801 l has conveyed- to the Colonial Secretary at Suva,
