FORTY YEARS AGO.

School Examination. —The annual examination of schools in the Manawatu was conducted last week by K. Foulis, Esq., Inspector for the Wanganui Education Board district. The following are particulars of the results at the Foxton ami Alouloa schools: —Foxton, Master, Air Chas. Hulke; assistant mistress, Aliss AtcPhoe; pupil teacher, Aliss Nash. Number on roll: Boys 78, girls 64, total 142. Present at examination: Boys 68, girls 57, total 125. Out of the 125, 52 were too young to he brought up, the remaining 73 were presented for classification, of whom 65 passed iu their respective standards.
Mouton. —Teacher, -Miss Grace. Number on roll: Boys 14, girls 17, total 31. Present at examination; Boys 13, including 3 Maoris; girls 17, including 0 Maoris; total 30.
