PROPOSED WATER SCHEME.
The Mayor stated at last night’s Council meeting that it was now nine or ten years since a poll of ratepayers was taken on the question oh a water and drainage scheme for the Borough, and a number of ratepayers were now asking that another poll should be taken on this question. He had been thinking if it would not be a good idea to convene a meeting of ratepayers with a view to ascertaining what support a proposal of this kind tvould bo likely to receive. To take a poll it would be necessary to have a new roll prepared, and this, together with the cost of taking the poll, would amount to a fair sum, and it was no good going to this expense unless there was a reasonable chance of the poll being carried. To have a poll turned down 'incant shelving the proposal for some years, and he wanted to avoid this. If a public meeting were called and the proposal was favourably received, then they should go on and take a poll. Further consideration of this matter was left over until next meeting.
