The estimated population of the Dominion oil June 30th last was 1,201,587, inclusive of.Maori* ami residents of the Cook and other Pacific Islands. Exclusive of these latter, the total estimated population at the date named was .1,139,014, an increase, compared with tiie estimated total population at December 31st last, of 30,041. The Maori population at the census of 1910 was 49,770, while the annexed islands ha_d at the same date a population of 12,797. The details of the population, as estimated at Juno 30th, 1919, are as follows: —

Estimated population (exelusive of Maoris and residents of Cook ami other Pacific islands) at December 31st, 1910: Males, 459, 895; females, 550,008; total, 1,100,503. Maori population, census 1910: Males, 25,933; female.-, 23,843; total 49,770. Population Cook and other islands, census 1910; Males, 0,552; females, 0,245; total, 12,797. Total estimated population of Dominion at June 30th, 1919; Males, 001,790; females, 599,797; total, 1,20.1,587: As will he seen from the* table which follows, the increases in the population in the years 1911 and 1915 were very small, while in 1910 and 1917 there were actual decreases, Both conditions were due, in great part, to the war, immigration being greatly restricted, while the emigration iigures were swelled by the departure of troops lor the front. With the exeeption of 1910 a.ml 1917, the population of New Zealand lias shown a continuous, though not a regular, increase in each year since 1855. In 1918, and in the present year to the end of June, the increase is again continuing. Details of (ho estimated population for each year since 1999, and for the first six months of this year (excluding Maoris and island residents) follow: — Estimated Population.

It will ho noted that the loss of men in the past three aud a-half years, due to the absence of troops, has brought the female population slightly ahead of the male, though the ligures fur this year to June 30th only show a preponderance of females to the number of 404. The increase of females has been greater than that of males in each year since aud including 1909. The year .1914 saw the hrst actual decrease in the male population, due entirely to men leaving fur the front. The decrease was repealed in each of Die three following years. In I9KJ and 1917 these decreases in the male population more than counterbalanced the increases in the number of females in the country, resulting in Iho decreases in the total population for those years already referred to. The annual increase of females in New Zealand has never fallen below 3,000 in any year since 1860.

The gradual equalisation of the sexes up to JDIG, when for the first time the number of females was grealer I ban the number of males, is shown by the records of the census years since 1801. In that year the proportion of females in the country to 1,000 males was 622. In succeeding census years the proportions were: —1871, 705; 1881, 817; 1891, 883; 1901, 903;” 1906, 887; 1911, 896; and 1916, 993.

The census of 1010 was taken on October 15lh, and the total population at that dale, including Maoris and residents of the Pacific Islands, as well as the Expeditionary Force and New Zealand civilians then in Samoa, was 1,102,293. Exclusive of Maoris and residents of the Islands, etc., the total was 1,099,-1-19, divided as follows;

North Island, 330,839 males, 320,233 females, total 051,072; South Island, 220,930 males, 227,411 females, total 448,377. Taking the four large centres and their suburbs, styled in the census records as metropolitan areas, they contained 390,390 of the total Dominion population at the dale named. The details are: — Mot.
