SUMMER SHOW.
The local Horticultural Society’s . Summer Show was held in the Town on Thursday and yesterday, and was fairly well patronised by Urn public. The display as a whole was excellent. In the opinion of a visitor, who has witnessed many shows in larger centres, we were informed that the Foxton exhibition compared more than favourably with anything lie had yet seen. The display of vegetables, though not large, showed what the Foxton soil is capable of producing under skilled treatment. The potato exhibits, and other vegetables, were very good. Air D. Whibley exhibited some line specimens in this connection, as did the Rev. Harding. There was not a very wide range of exhibits in the pot plants section, the honours being shared between Miss 0. Nye and Mrs AlcAlurray. The cut blooms were a feature of the Show, and as usual Afosdames A. S. Easton, Galland, Renton, and .F, Robinson were to the fore in lids connection, with magnificent specimens. In the rose section some magnificent blooms were shown, including some Otaki specimens shown by Mr 11. Witched, who pulled off the prize for Ibe champion bloom. Mrs ■A. S. Easton, Mrs Oalland and Miss J. A. 'Ross were also well represented in this section. Some line blooms were shown for exhibition only by Mr Pearson. The sweet pea section was not so full Ibis year, but some line varieties were exhibited by AJesdames Ronton and Symcs. The Society’s trophy in this section was annexed by Airs AlcAlurray this year, with Mrs Renton as runuor-np. Airs Renton won the trophy at the (wo preceding shows. The fruit display, its was to lie expected, did not attract many entries. Sonic tine gooseberries were shown by Mr Whitehead, red currant.- by .Miss 0. Nye, and strawberries by Aliss O. Nye and Mrs Patterson. The dairy • produce section was poorly re'presented. Tlic cookery class brought forth quite a large number of entries. and I lie Judge had an unenviable (ask in settling the bojnmrs. Ale-dames Hillman, Ingle, Cunningham, (1. King and Miss 11. Skcilcn arc to lie congratulated upon their work in this important division. There were I!) entries in the laiuily cake competition, made to recipe, and the first prize went to Airs Hillman, will) Airs Ingle runner-up. In the children's cookery class Miss Pbvllis Robinson displayed a master band. The fancy work exhibits attracted a good deal ol interest. I be decorative class was a distinctive feature of the Show, and gave evidence of admirable taste. .Mrs GalJand’s exhibit of decorative table, with embellishment-, was a masterpiece of artistic taste. ( rcdil is due to the children who competed in the decorative class, and a special ivoi'd of praise is due to Miss ( aris Griliiii, who should make her mark as a milliner. Tim school work, pen-
nunisbij), drawing, mapping and brusbwork, rctlccled credit upon local pupils and Hm Stale school (caching staff, la the miscellaneous section some line exhibits in oil paintings were shown by several ex - hibitors.
Tlu' judging, on I lie whole. gave cverv satisfaction, while t! i < 1 stewimls arc to lie congratulated iipon Uic splendid arratigcmcuts made. The secretary. Mr Patterson (and we must m«L forget Mrs Patterson ill this connection), discharged his mull ifarious duties with satisfaction lu all. while the president (Mr M. E. Harder) and Committee did much to ensure the success of this year’s exhibition. The tea rooms were in the capable hands id' Mrs Procter, who was kept very busy.
