BREACH OF PROMISE.
Christchurch, Nov. 17
Evelyn Mabel Smith, spin Mer, of Christchurch, sued Eric Edward Smith, engineer, of Taihape, before Mr Justice Herdman, in the Supreme Court to-day, for £5Ol damages for breach of promise of marriage. The case was not defended. Plaintiff stated that she and defendant became engaged, and when lie went away in the Main Body he sent her a ring from Cairo and numerous letters. He stayed with her family at Taihape when he came back to New Zealand, and seemed anxious to marry. Later he broke off the engagement, saying that; “a subtle change” had come over him. The jury awarded £250 damages, with costs on the middle scale.
