THE MANAWATU SEAT.
IT would appear that the contest for the M'anawatu seat is to he confined to a straight-out issue between the Reform and Labour candidates. Mr Edwa.rd Newman, the Reform candidate, lias not yet taken the platform, but Avill do so immediately upon his return from Rotorua, whither he has gone Par a short rest after the recent strenuous session. Mr Hillier, the Labour candidate,‘has already addressed meetings throughout the electoral 11 . .Air Newman is well-known throughout the electorate, except at Pdiamion and Tokoniaru, • having previously represented the whole of the northern end from Foxtail in Parliament prior to (he re-arrangement ■of the bo-
undaries. Although Mr Newman is a -loyal supporter cm broad principles of the Reform Party, no one can accuse him of being a crusted Tory. Personally he is held in high esteem by both Parlies m the House, and his opponent will find in Mr Newman a man who.will not stoop to gutter politics or .personalities. The contest will afford the Labour Party an opportunity to gunge its strength in a country electorate.
