A MAORI’S MISDEED.
At the: Wellington Supreme Court on Thursday, a Maori named Jack Tauihanga, who had beqp convicted the previous day of .assaulting an old man and robbing 1 him of £1 -11, said he had nothing to say when asked the usual question. The police stated that the prisoner was a hard-working man, but he had been previously convicted of theft and assault, and also consorted with prostitutes. Mis Honour said that the oil once -which Tauihanga had been convicted of was a most *disgraceful one. He had. not given the police any assistance to recover the stolen money. He proposed to inflict a severe sentence! but would make (he terms such that if he behaved himself he would be let off lightly. Prisoner was sentenced to a years imprisonment with hard labour, and ‘to three years’ reformative treatment. At JJio end of twelve months, if lie behaved himself and showed his wisdom in helping the police to trace the money stolen, lie would perhaps find relief.
