THE HEMP INDUSTRY.

OCTOBER GRADING RETURNS

According to a return supplied by the Department of Agriculture, the fjimntities of hern].;, tow, and stripper slips graded at the ports of. the Dominion during October were as follows: —

Hemp. —The total number of bales graded was 8,534, as compared with 12,1)01 for the corresponding period last year, a decrease of 4,307 bales. For the twelve months ended 31st October, the number of bales graded was 90,530, as compared with 103,920 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 07,390 hales.

Tow. —The total number of bales graded was 2,324, as compared with 1,302 for the same month last

year, an increase of 902 bales. For the twelve months ended 3.lst October, the number of bales graded was 10,817, as compared with 31,030 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 14,819 bales. Stripper-Slips.— October. 1919, nil; October, 1918, 137 bales. Por twelve months ended 31st October, 152 bales, as compared with 1,550 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 1,404 bales. PALMERSTON SHOW AWARDS. The hemp competitions at the Palmerston Show were judged by Mr W. H. Perris, Chief Hemp Grader, yesterday. The exhibits were particularly good, as the points awurded indicate,* the first prize for the scutched bale being awarded the maximum points, and that for the unscutcbed bale being only one point less than the possible. The following are the results; — Scutched Hemp.—Mr H. T. Greedy (A. and L. Seifert Flaxdressing Co., Ltd.), 100 points, Ist; Mr Carter (A. L. Seifert Flaxdressing Co., Ltd.), 97 paints, 2nd. Unscutched Hemp. —Air 11. T. Greedy, 74 points, Ist, and 71 points 2ml; Ashlca Hemp Company, 70 points, 3rd.

A particularly good parcel of hem]) frbm the C. L. P. Plaxmilling Co. (Mr W. Bock) was graded at Wellington this week, it being awarded 81 points (fine). Mr Ferris (chief hemp grader) states that it was a particularly well milled line, and the best that, has been sent from the Manawatu district for some years.
